Cases in Early Brisbane
Eight Mile Plains
A horrible murder was committed
on Saturday afternoon, and the man who did it afterwards poisoned himself.
A farmer named Joseph Doel, living at the Eight-mile Plains, near Oxley Creek,
rode up to tho house of a neighbour (Thomas Freeney) ond spoke about someone
having robbed him. At that moment a man named Martin Lander was seen
along the road, and Doel immediately started towards him. Freeney then heard a
shot fired, and saw
Lander fall off his horse, and noticed Doel making towards Brisbane at a

What transpired then is not
exactly known, loud shrieks from the cottage terrified the neighbours, and Mrs.
O'Donnell's little boy ran out crying, "Aunty's killing mother." The
neighbours ran up, but the screams had ceased before they reached the
house. The door was closed and they burst it open. On the floor Mrs.
O'Donnell lay stretched, her throat cut in such a manner that it seemed as if
her head had almost been severed from her body ; beside her was her
sister-in-law, also with a bleeding wound in her neck, and in her hand an old
thin table knife exceedingly sharp.
